2.2 ActiveX: Automatic downloads
Although Google’s search
toolbar and Adobe Acrobat Reader uses ActiveX
controls for legitimate purposes, spyware
developers have –of course- figured out how to
use it to deliver other content to your computer
as well.
PopUpCop
disables them, but then other websites might not
work properly. If you find out that this is the
case for you, try setting your ActiveX
preferences in Internet Explorer. An easy way to
do this is to follow the steps below:
1.
Open Internet Explorer.
2.
Click “Tools” on the menu bar at the top
of the screen.
3.
Click “Internet Options” at the bottom of
the “Tools” menu.
4.
When the Internet Options window appears,
click the “Security” tab at the top of the
“Internet Options” window.
5.
Click the “Internet” icon at the top of
the window. The icons at the top represent
categories of sites for which you may set
security.
6.
Click the “Custom Level…” button at the
bottom right of the window. The “Security
Settings” window opens, and the ActiveX settings
are right at or near the top.
7.
Select “Disable” under the “ActiveX
controls and plug-ins” list.
8.
Click the “OK” button at the bottom of
the window. The “Security Settings” window will
close.
9.
Close and restart Internet Explorer to
begin surfing more safely using your new
settings.
