5.3 Run Hijack This

Hijackthis! is a homepage hijacker detector and remover. It can also track down spyware problems with your computer. It is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It targets the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites. 

The company strongly suggests that you run Adaware or Spybot before you try Hijackthis! and, if you are having problems with your homepage being hijacked, that you use CWShredder first. Doing so might just fix your problems without having to analyze your logs.  These will fix problems without having to analyze the log. 

The homepage of Hijackthis! warns that it’s best that you don’t make changes using their product unless you know what they’re doing. You should save the log and send it to an expert before deleting items yourself.

Below are some basic steps to give you an idea of how HijackThis! works:

·         First, save the file on your desktop then click on the icon to run the program.

·         The window will display, click on “Do a system scan.”

·         Wait while the program scans your computer and save the results as a file on your desktop.

·         Send the file as an attachment to one of the sites listed on the Hijackthis website or other forums, like Spywareinfo.  Others can help you analyze the data and advise you on which items to remove and which ones to leave alone.
